Copywriting job descriptions reveal how organisations currently define the profession. The Modern Copywriter analyses 230 job adverts to identify the responsibilities, skills and capabilities employers associate with copywriting roles in 2026.
The research examines vacancies advertised across the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and France during three separate sampling periods between January and June 2026.
Using The BNC Analysis Frameworkโข, each advert was reviewed through a combination of quantitative coding and qualitative narrative analysis. The findings provide a practical benchmark for professional copywriters, aspiring copywriters, hiring managers, marketing leaders, and organisations developing copywriting roles

Key Findings from the Research
Writing Remains the Foundation of the Copywriterโs Role
Strong writing ability appeared across every role analysed. Employers consistently looked for copywriters who could communicate clearly, adapt tone of voice and produce persuasive content across multiple channels.
Strategy Appears in Almost Six in Ten Copywriting Job Adverts
Strategy was explicitly mentioned in 59.1% of the adverts analysed. Employers associated copywriting with activities such as: messaging development, brand positioning, campaign planning, customer journeys, content planning, audience research, and performance optimisation.
AI Is Commonly Presented as a Workplace Tool
AI appeared in 57.8% of the job adverts analysed. Employers most frequently described AI as a practical tool supporting: research, ideation, drafting, workflow management, content optimisation, and productivity. Only a relatively small number of roles required advanced AI expertise or AI-specific responsibilities.
Storytelling Remains a Core Copywriting Capability
Storytelling was explicitly referenced in 41% of the adverts. Employers commonly connected storytelling with brand communication, customer engagement, building compelling narratives, and translating complex ideas into accessible content
Which Industries Are Hiring Copywriters?
Agencies represented the largest source of vacancies, accounting for almost one quarter of the dataset.
The most frequently represented industries were: agencies (23.9%), SaaS and software (18.3%), eCommerce and retail (10.9%), financial services (9.6%), health and healthcare (4.8%).
Additional vacancies appeared across education, manufacturing, property, construction, government, travel, gaming, transport, automotive, sport, FMCG, music and the non-profit sector.

What Complementary Skills Do Employers Want from Copywriters?
Employers frequently requested additional marketing, technical and organisational capabilities alongside writing.
The five most commonly identified complementary skills were: stakeholder collaboration (21%), social media (17%), research (16%), brand and messaging (15%), CRM and lifecycle marketing (15%),
Other capabilities not in the top ten included UX writing, content design, conversion rate optimisation, creative collaboration, eCommerce product content, video scripting, A/B testing and content planning.

Among the permanent full-time roles that disclosed an annual salary, the average was ยฃ36,875 and the median was ยฃ34,500. The calculation was based on 28 comparable vacancies.
How many copywriting job adverts disclose salary?
Fewer than half disclosed salary information. Salary was stated in 44.8% of the adverts, while 55.2% did not include it.
Are most copywriting roles remote, hybrid or office-based?
Hybrid working was the most commonly advertised arrangement in the dataset, exceeding both fully remote and fully office-based roles.
Are there many entry-level copywriting jobs?
More than half of the adverts did not state a formal seniority level. Among those that did, senior roles substantially outnumbered junior vacancies. The report describes how employers presented seniority within the sampled adverts and does not measure the complete availability of entry-level roles across the employment market.
